  • This is the CSAN with a single level of storage nodes.
  • It acts as a SAN at the block device level or as a NAS at the file protocol level as shown in the following diagram.
 
  • With the Virtualization/Parallel-I/O-In-A-Cluster on top, the CSAN becomes a universal external storage:
    Capable of supporting simultaneous access from multiple of different kinds and from multiple operating systems of different kinds.
   
    Under a single naming space (one naming scheme for all so that it is easy to manage and to share. Each file has one name to all users regardless of their operating systems, hardware and software).
   
    To share, to read and write simultaneously to the same file by all users regardless of their operating systems, hardware and software.
   
    To support multiple remote or local protocol of different kinds simultaneously.
   
    To allow management of physical storage as a single pool of storage for all users, for all file systems and operating systems of different kinds. This capability minimizes unused but unavailable storage blocks tremendously.
